Deep in the Season after Pentecost, the church in Year A turns to readings that explore the relationship between God's provision and our response. At the heart of this week stand two vivid scenes: the Lord directing Moses at Horeb to strike the rock so that water may flow for a thirsty, murmuring people (Exodus 17:6), and Jesus opening a parable in which a father sends two sons to work in the vineyard (Matthew 21:28). In both, divine initiative comes first, for God stands upon the rock before the water gushes forth and the father speaks before the sons decide, yet each scene insists that grace summons action rather than mere assent. As the liturgical year moves toward its autumn close, this Sunday invites us to inhabit that rhythm: to trust the God who provides abundantly and to answer with deeds that show our faith.

In Matthew 21:28, Jesus presents a parable of two sons, urging us to consider the true nature of obedience not in spoken words, but in faithful action. Similarly, Exodus 17:6 recounts Moses striking the rock at God's command, demonstrating how even in seemingly impossible situations, God provides life-giving sustenance through obedience. These scriptures call us to reflect on our own responsiveness to God's will, challenging us to move beyond passive agreement towards active, life-affirming service. They remind us that our faithful deeds, empowered by divine grace, are the truest testament to our faith.

Here the preacher may invite hearers to see the vineyard as the landscape of their own lives, the daily round of work, family, and neighbor in which God's quiet summons waits for a response. The question the parable poses is disarmingly direct: when our first answer has been no, will we yet turn and go? Exodus adds its own pastoral reassurance, for the God who commanded Moses to strike the rock is the God who stands before us in every wilderness season, ready to bring water from stone. A fitting discipline for the week, then, might be choosing one small, concrete act of obedience, an apology offered, a need met, a promise kept, that lets action complete what words have begun. In such faithful doing, we discover that obedience is not a grim obligation but the channel through which God's grace flows into a thirsty world.
